We understand because we’ve been there. An incredible 90% of our team are adoptive parents themselves. We’ve felt the same butterflies, navigated the same questions, and experienced the same profound joy of finally bringing a child home. We don’t just manage your case; we walk alongside you with empathy, expertise, and a deep commitment to finding loving families for the wonderful children of Honduras.
Why Choose the Honduras Adoption Program with CHI?
Choosing an agency is one of the most significant decisions you will make. With 50 years of experience and a team that’s personally invested, CHI offers a uniquely supportive and effective path to international adoption.
A Team That Truly Understands
When you call with a question, you’re not just speaking to a specialist; you’re often speaking to another adoptive parent. We get it. We understand the late-night worries and the bursts of hope. This shared experience means we can provide a level of emotional support and practical advice that other agencies simply can’t match. We’ve built our agency on the belief that families thrive when they feel seen, heard, and supported every step of the way.
Official Accreditation and Deep Experience
Children’s House International is fully accredited by the Honduran Central Authority, the Secretaria de Ninez, Adolescencia y Familias (SENAF). This means we work directly with Honduras’s federal social services, ensuring a streamlined and ethical process. Our International Specialist brings over 30 years of experience working in Latin America, offering unparalleled expertise and strong in-country relationships. We handle the complex details so you can focus on preparing your heart and home for your new child.
Who Are the Children Waiting in Honduras?

Honduras is home to many incredible children who are waiting for their forever families. Understanding who these children are can help you see if this program is the right fit for your family.
- Ages: The children available for adoption are generally between 4 and 13 years old.
- Sibling Groups: Many sibling groups are waiting to be adopted together, allowing you to keep these precious family bonds intact.
- Special Needs: Children with special needs are also in need of loving, permanent homes.
- Gender: There are currently more boys available for adoption than girls.
The greatest need is for families open to older children, sibling groups, and children with manageable special needs. Opening your heart to these children can often lead to a shorter wait time and a profoundly rewarding journey.
What to Expect on Your Adoption Journey
The international adoption process can seem complex, but we break it down into clear, manageable steps. From your initial application to the moment you meet your child, we are with you.
Parent Eligibility
Honduras has specific requirements for prospective adoptive parents to ensure a stable and nurturing environment for every child. Key requirements include:
- Citizenship: At least one adoptive parent must be a U.S. citizen.
- Marital Status: Heterosexual couples married for at least three years and single women are eligible to adopt.
- Age: Parents must be between 25 and 51 years old and at least 15 years older than the child they wish to adopt.
- Family Size: Preference is given to families who currently have fewer than three children.
Our team can help you review the full list of requirements and determine your eligibility.
The Life-Changing Travel Experience

One of the most memorable parts of the Honduras adoption program is the travel. You will travel to Honduras twice. The first trip, lasting about 5-10 days, is to meet your child. This is a crucial bonding period where you begin to build the foundations of your new family.
The second trip occurs 6 to 12 months later, after the court process is finalized. This stay lasts approximately 3 to 4 weeks, during which you will complete the final paperwork and bring your child home. Traveling to your child’s birth country is a life-changing experience. You get to see where they came from, experience their culture firsthand, and create memories that will last a lifetime.
A Clear and Supportive Process
From the moment you partner with CHI, you will have a dedicated team supporting you. We will guide you through:
- The Home Study: A Hague-accredited home study is required. If you live in a state where CHI is licensed (WA, UT, FL, ID, LA, TX), we can complete it for you. If not, we’ll help you find a trusted local agency.
- The Dossier: Honduras requires a lot of documentation. We will ensure your paperwork is perfect to avoid delays.
- The Wait: The timeframe for a referral can range from 6 months to 2 years after your dossier is approved. This depends heavily on your family’s openness to age, gender, and special needs.
- Post-Adoption Support: After you come home, we continue to support you. Honduras requires six post-placement reports within the first two years, followed by self-reports until the child is 18.
