About The Children

Children available for adoption are between 10 to 15 years old. Younger children with special needs and some sibling groups with younger children may also be available for adoption.

Brazilian children come from a variety of ethnic groups that make up their rich cultural heritage. These groups are Latino-Brazilian, African-Brazilian, and European-Brazilian.

Eligibility

Applicants should be older than 25 years old. Both applicants must be 16 years older than the child.
Single women and men are allowed to adopt.
A Psychological Evaluation is required
Families with health and mental issues will be considered on a case by case basis.
Adoptive parents must have clean criminal history records to adopt from Brazil. (Some minor infractions occurring many years ago may be considered).

Travel and Time Frame

Travel

Adopting from Brazil is a one-trip process about 6-9 weeks long.

Time Frame

The average time between referral and picking up the child is about 4-6 months.  The entire adoption process can take about 18-36 months.

ADOPTION PROCESS

CHI has worked with adoptions in Latin America for over 25 years.  Our team in Brazil takes great care of our families from start to finish.  CHI’s International Specialist is an adoptive mom and also has over 25 years of experience.  She will be available should you have any questions before and during your stay. Apply to Children’s House International’s Brazil Program

Complete Home Study Process with a CHI Social worker or a local Hague Accredited Agency

Submit Approved Home Study.

Apply for I-800A Approval from USCIS.

Compile your dossier for Brazil.

Obtain Apostile seals for dossier documents

Your completed dossier will be sent to Brazil for translation. It will then be forwarded to State Judicial Commission of International Adoption or CEJA for their review and approval.

CEJA provides a referral and the CHI Social Services Supervisor sends the referral to the family

Upon family acceptance of the referral, the i800 is filed with USCIS to determine the child’s adoptability. Travel takes place after USCIS approval

Both parents must travel to Brazil to the region where the child resides. As long as one remains, the other parent may return home after the first week and return near the end of the process for court. One parent must stay in Brazil for the 6-9 week adoption process.

After obtaining the child’s visa at the U.S. consulate in Rio de Janeiro, the family can return to the U.S. with their child. Upon entry, ,they are automatically a US citizen.
