Eligibility

Applicants should be more than 25 years old and a maximum age of 50.
Couples where one parent is over 50 may adopt on a case by case basis.
Both applicants much be 21 years older than the child.
Couples must be married at least 2 years.
Families with up to 5 children may adopt, but smaller families are preferred by Ghana Social Welfare.
Single women may adopt ONLY if they are Ghanaian.
Families with health and mental issues will be considered on a case by case basis.
Adoptive parents with any criminal history Considered on a case by case basis. (Applicants with a criminal history of child abuse, violence or domestic violence are not eligible to adopt.).

Travel and Time Frame

Travel

Three trips are required or an extended stay in country.  The first trip is soon after referral acceptance.  A one month “bonding period” is required. Both parents must travel for this.  It is possible that after two to three weeks, one can return home.  The second trip is to attend the court hearing, which is approximately six months later.  The third trip is one to two months after court for the child’s visa appointment at the U.S. Embassy.  The second and third trips are for one to two weeks.

Time Frame

The average time between referral and picking up the child is about 8-10 months.  The entire adoption process can take about 16 to 24 months.

CHI has worked with adoptions for almost 50 years.  Our team in Ghana takes great care of our families from start to finish.  CHI’s International Specialist is an adoptive mom and also has over 30 years of experience.  She will be available should you have any questions before and during your stay. Apply to Children’s House International’s Ghana Program.

Complete the Home Study Process with a CHI Social Worker or a Local Hague Accredited Social Worker.

Submit Approved Home Study.

Apply for I-800A Approval from USCIS.

Compile your dossier for Ghana

Your completed dossier will be sent to Ghana. It will then be forwarded to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection MoGCSP (Central Authority) for their review and approval.

MoGCSP provides a referral and the CHI Social Services Supervisor sends the referral to the family.

Upon family acceptance of the referral, the i800 is filed with USCIS to determine the child’s adoptability. Family travels to Ghana for one month bonding period.

Parents return for court approximately 6 months after bonding period. I800 and Article 5 must be received before this trip.

After court appearance, family returns approximately 1-2 months later to obtain child’s visa at the U.S. Embassy in Accra. After obtaining the child’s visa, the family can return to the U.S. with their child. Upon entry, ,they are automatically a US citizen.
