Single Parents Adopt Internationally? One Mom’s Inspiring CHI Adoption Story

Single Parents Adopt Internationally?  One Mom’s Inspiring CHI Adoption Story:

The Best Decision of My Life ❤️I Adopted as a Single Mom

“I Thought being single would keep me from becoming a Mom…” Six years ago, I was convinced my dream of becoming a mother would never happen.

I had spent years hoping, praying, and wondering if I would ever hear someone call me Mom. As a single woman, I constantly asked myself the same question many people ask today: Can single parents adopt internationally? The answer changed my life forever. Yes, they absolutely can!

Today, I wake up every morning to two incredible children who fill my home with laughter, hugs, soccer games, bedtime stories, and more love than I ever imagined possible. Looking back now, I wish someone had told me sooner that being single wasn’t the obstacle I thought it was. That’s exactly why I’m sharing my story today.

The Waiting Was the Hardest Part

When I first started researching international adoption, I felt overwhelmed. There were country requirements. Paperwork, home studies and questions.

Sometimes I wondered if I was doing everything for nothing. But then I found Children’s House International (CHI). From my very first conversation, something felt different. I wasn’t treated like another application. I was treated like a future parent, every question mattered, every concern was heard.Whenever I felt discouraged, someone reminded me that my future child was worth waiting for. Looking back now, they were right.

The Best Advice I Ever Received

One member of the CHI team once told me something I’ll never forget: “Don’t put your life on hold while you’re waiting. Prepare your heart instead.”

That advice completely changed my perspective. Instead of seeing the waiting period as punishment… I started seeing it as preparation, I decorated bedrooms, I built a support network, I adjusted my work schedule, I imagined family dinners, I pictured bedtime stories, I began living as though my children were already on their way. Because somehow… I knew they were.

Then Everything Changed Overnight: After 10 months of waiting, everything happened so fast, travel plans, and finally, meeting my children. Nothing could have prepared me for that first moment. Two little faces. Two little hearts waiting for someone to call family.

Six years later, they’re no longer the frightened children I first met. They are confident, funny, curious, and incredibly kind. Our family wasn’t built overnight. It was built one bedtime story, one hug, one school event, and one “I love you” at a time.

Today, my adopted children are not only my son and daughter, they are also two of my closest friends. We share a spirit of adventure, laughter, and unconditional love. Although they continue to work through the effects of early childhood trauma and anxiety, I am constantly amazed by their resilience and emotional intelligence. Every conversation we have reminds me how much we have both grown together.

Like many adopted children, they are navigating questions about identity and their life stories. I have complete faith that they will emerge from these challenges stronger, more confident, and ready to embrace their futures.

Can Single Parents Adopt Internationally? YES!

One of the biggest myths I hear is: “I can’t adopt because I’m single.” That simply isn’t true. Several international adoption programs currently welcome single applicants, depending on each country’s requirements. Countries that may allow eligible single applicants include:

Brazil / Bulgaria / Colombia / Ecuador / Georgia / Honduras / Hong Kong / India / Portugal

Some countries also have specific eligibility requirements for single applicants, while others are currently limited to married couples or have citizenship requirements. Since international adoption laws can change, it’s always best to speak directly with an accredited adoption agency to learn which programs may fit your situation.

Why I Recommend Children’s House International

If someone asked me today, “Why should I choose CHI?” My answer would be simple. Because they understand. Not just professionally. Personally.

Did you know that 90% of the staff at Children’s House International are adoptive parents themselves? That means the people guiding you through your adoption journey understand the excitement, the fear, the waiting, the paperwork… Because many of them have lived it themselves. That made all the difference for me.

My Advice to Every Single Parent Dreaming of Adoption

If I could sit down with every single person wondering whether adoption is possible, I’d tell them this:

❤️ Don’t wait for your life to be perfect.

❤️ Don’t assume being single disqualifies you.

❤️ Build your support system.

❤️ Ask questions.

❤️ Believe your family is possible.

Most importantly… Don’t give up. Six years ago, I was sitting exactly where you are today. Wondering, researching, praying.
