What Is a Home Study?
A home study is a pre-placement report that evaluates the prospective adoptive family’s ability to parent a child adopted internationally.
As a prospective parent, you must complete the home study process with a CHI social worker or a local Hague-accredited social worker to complete your dossier. They will evaluate your family after home visits and through interviews to determine your eligibility to adopt. The goal is to learn more about your family and see if your home is safe and ready for a child.

Get Your Papers Ready
Start by keeping your important papers in one place. Your social worker will tell you which documents you need. Having them ready in advance will help save time. The documents may include:
- Birth and marriage records
- Tax and income records
- Medical reports
- Background check records
- Fingerprint records
- Personal references
Get Your Home Ready
Your home does not need to be large or perfect. Before the home visit, look around your home and make sure it is safe for a child. Check smoke alarms, doors, windows, medicine storage, and the child’s sleeping area.
Be Ready to Talk
Your social worker may ask about your childhood, family, work, marriage, health, and daily life. You can also talk about why you want to adopt. Be honest. You do not need perfect answers. The goal is to help the social worker understand your family.
