Children´s House International Ghana Adoption Program

In West Africa, nestled along the Gulf of Guinea, lies a country known for its vibrant culture, lush landscapes, and the incredible warmth of its people. This is Ghana, a place where the word “Akwaaba” – meaning “welcome” – is a genuine invitation extended to all. Beyond the tropical beaches and rich heritage, there is a profound opportunity to build a family and change a life. For many children in Ghana, the dream of a loving, permanent family is waiting to come true.

Children’s House International (CHI) invites you to explore our Ghana Adoption Program. This journey is more than just a process; it’s a path to parenthood that is deeply rewarding and transformative. You can provide a stable, loving home for a child while immersing yourself in one of Africa’s most welcoming nations. If you’ve been considering international adoption, your story might just begin in Ghana.

The Heart of Ghana: The Children Awaiting Families

The need for adoptive families in Ghana is significant. Children are often orphaned due to widespread poverty and disease, circumstances that make it impossible for extended family members to provide care. These children, resilient and full of life, are waiting in orphanages and care centers for their forever families.

Who are the children?

  • Ages: The greatest need is for families open to adopting children between the ages of 3 and 15.
  • Sibling Groups: There is also a need for families who can keep sibling groups together, preserving a vital bond of love and support.
  • Health: Prospective parents should be prepared to welcome children with a variety of needs. Some may have minor, manageable health conditions, while others may have developmental delays from their time in institutional care.

Despite the hardships they have faced, these children are known for being warm, loving, and enthusiastic about life. They are not defined by their circumstances but by their potential and their capacity to love. Welcoming an older child or a sibling group into your home can be an incredibly powerful and fulfilling experience, offering them the stability and individual attention they need to thrive.

Are You Eligible for the Ghana Adoption Program?

Ghana has specific criteria for prospective adoptive parents to ensure that every child is placed in a secure and nurturing environment. CHI is here to help you understand and navigate these requirements.

Here are some of the key eligibility details:

  • Age: Applicants must be at least 25 years old. There must be at least a 21-year age difference, but no more than a 50-year difference, between the parents and the child.
  • Marital Status: Couples must be married for a minimum of two years.
  • Citizenship: At least one parent must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Family Size: Families with up to five children are welcome to apply, though smaller families are often preferred.
  • Single Applicants: Single women may adopt, but only if they are of Ghanaian citizenship.
  • Health and History: Applicants with past health issues or a criminal history are considered on a case-by-case basis. A history of child abuse, domestic violence, or other violent crimes will disqualify an applicant.

Our team at CHI is experienced in guiding families through these requirements and can help determine your eligibility.

Your Adoption Journey: What to Expect

Children´s House International Ghana Adoption Program

The adoption process can feel complex, but with 50 years of experience, CHI provides dedicated support every step of the way. Our international specialists and in-country team are committed to making your journey as smooth as possible.

The journey involves three main phases:

  1. Preparation and Dossier

This initial phase involves your application, a home study, and compiling your dossier—a collection of documents required by both the U.S. and Ghanaian governments. Our team provides detailed checklists and guidance to ensure everything is prepared correctly.

  1. Referral and Matching

Once your dossier is submitted, you will wait to be matched with a child. The Central Authority in Ghana reviews your file and identifies a child or sibling group for your family. CHI will present you with the referral, which includes the child’s social and medical history. This is a pivotal moment in your journey.

  1. Travel and Finalization

Travel is a unique and essential part of the Ghana adoption process. Families should plan for three trips to Ghana, or one extended stay. The first trip is a one-month bonding period with your child. The subsequent trips are for court hearings and the final visa appointment. These trips are not just a requirement; they are a precious opportunity to connect with your child, experience their culture firsthand, and build the foundation of your new family. Our in-country team will be there to support you with lodging, translation, and navigation through the final legal steps.

The CHI Difference: Support You Can Trust

Choosing an adoption agency is one of the most important decisions you will make. At Children’s House International, we believe in a personal, supportive approach. Our International Specialist is an adoptive mom with over 30 years of experience, and our entire team is passionate about uniting children with loving families.

We also understand that financing an adoption is a major consideration. We provide clear cost summaries and connect our families with Your Adoption Finance Coach, a unique service designed to help you create a comprehensive financial plan to make your adoption dream a reality.
