Are you thinking about adopting a child from another country? You may have questions. Where do you start? What documents do you need? How do you choose a country or program? An international adoption agency, such as Children’s House International, can help you through the process.
What is International Adoption?
International adoption has many rules. These rules vary by country. An adoption agency can explain the process and what to expect.
Children’s House International (CHI) is a nonprofit international adoption agency. We were founded in 1975 and are Hague-accredited. India was our first adoption program. We have worked there since 1975. Our team will help you understand the international adoption process.
Steps in the International Adoption Process
Complete a Home Study
A home study is a part of the adoption process. A social worker will learn about you and your family. You may need documents such as birth certificates, marriage records, medical forms, income records, and background checks.
The social worker may ask about your family, work, health, finances, and your reasons for adopting. They will also visit your home. You may have at least three meetings at your home. Your home does not need to be perfect. It just needs to be safe and ready for a child.
Learn the Country’s Rules
Each country has its own rules. Our adoption staff can help you learn which documents and approvals you need.
For example, CHI’s India program has several steps. These may include a home study, U.S. immigration approval, document preparation, and approval through India’s Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA). The process also includes a child referral. Families may also need to complete other steps in both countries.
Choose an Adoption Agency
International adoption is a big decision. Before choosing a program, ask about the child’s age, health needs, timeline, travel, fees, and reports after adoption.
