So much of Helen’s little life is still ahead of her. She is only 18 months old and has spent her entire life in institutionalized care. She was born to a teenage mother and was born with Spina Bifida. Helen was lucky. In her country last year they decided that babies born with Spina Bifida would receive lifesaving surgery. Prior to last year, this was only possible if a family could pay for a portion of the surgical supplies. Because her surgeries were done swiftly after birth she is highly likely to develop normal cognition. In fact, she could be of above average intelligence, IF SHE GETS A FAMILY…if she remains in her home country she has no future…this is heartbreaking but true.
Andy was also born with Spina Bifida. Andy has also grown up in institutional care. He has also received surgery to correct his spinal defect and shunt surgery. Andy is a happy little guy who is developing very well despite his physical delays. Andy also has a bright future if adopted by a family…
Lara is 8 years old. She was also born with Spina Bifida. She was born during the time that all children with this condition were not given surgery. She has grown up to be a bright and sweet little girl despite the fact that she has an open sore that leaks spinal fluid on her back. She is at a very high risk for meningitis as a result of this. Her fragile, amazing life is a testament to the careful care of her caregivers at the orphanage. Lara could receive surgery if she has a family willing to adopt her. Lara could also have a bright future with a loving family.
